Electrical systems vary in complexity but of course almost all carry a high voltage current and so it is advisable not to play around with a system that you are unfamiliar with or not qualified to work with.

If you have done some basic work in the past, such as changing a plug, you may feel that you are ready to make some more significant changes but unless you are 100% confident, we would always recommended calling in a qualified electrician.

1. Tripping Out

If you are finding that a fuse keeps tripping in your house then it would be a good idea to call a local electrician. Trips can trigger sometimes due to a surge and this is usually quite normal however if the problem persists, it suggests that there is an issue with the wiring or a device that you are plugging in. Either way, it's time to get in touch.

2. Flickering lights

Lights can flicker or dim if extra devices are plugged in. This is because they are drawing a large amount of electricity from the system. Devices like these should have their own dedicated circuit and so it would be worth installing a dedicated connection.

3. Additional sockets

More and more devices are requiring a dedicated connection to the electric supply in your home. Add to this the number of phones, tablets and computers which people use on a daily basis, it's quite likely that you have run out of sockets and are relying on extension leads. Adding new sockets is a fairly routine task and you might be surprised at how much easier life is without cables trailing everywhere.

4. Shocking!

If any of your plug sockets or switches are warm to the touch or you get a shock from them when using them please call a local electrician as soon as possible. There is likely an issue with the circuit and you should consider fixing it before somebody gets hurt.
